Our General English programme in Sydney is structured across six proficiency levels. All students complete a placement assessment before starting to ensure they join the level that matches their current ability. Starter Level: General English Sydney
The Starter level is designed for students with little or no prior English knowledge. You will develop foundational skills in introducing yourself, understanding simple instructions, and managing basic everyday interactions such as shopping, transport, and asking for directions.
Classes focus on high-frequency vocabulary, basic sentence structures, simple present and past tenses, and pronunciation fundamentals. By the end of this level, you will be able to communicate in familiar, everyday situations with a degree of confidence.
Who is it for? Students who are complete beginners or who have had very limited prior exposure to English in a formal learning environment.
Elementary Level: General English Sydney

- Minimum age: 18 years
- Placement into the appropriate level is determined by a placement assessment completed before the course begins

- No minimum IELTS score or prior English study required for entry into the Starter or Elementary levels
- Students completing Upper Intermediate or Advanced General English may use their IIS General English completion as evidence of English proficiency for entry into certain vocational courses, subject to individual course requirements
Pathway Entry Requirements for IIS Vocational Courses After General English

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
General English is an ELICOS programme and is not part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Credit transfer and RPL do not apply to this course in the same way they do to AQF vocational qualifications.
However, if you have completed an equivalent English language programme at another CRICOS-registered provider, our admissions team may be able to take your previous study into account when determining your starting level at IIS. This is assessed on an individual basis through our placement process and is not a formal credit transfer arrangement.
If you are enquiring about credit transfer or RPL for one of our vocational qualifications, such as the Diploma of Hospitality Management or the Certificate III in Individual Support, please contact our admissions team directly. Vocational credit transfer and RPL assessments are separate from the General English enrolment process.
Qualifications that may be assessed for pathway purposes include:
- Completion of General English at Upper Intermediate or Advanced level at IIS
- Completion of an equivalent ELICOS programme at another CRICOS-registered provider
- Evidence of previous English-medium study at Certificate IV level or above at an Australian institution
- IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL results meeting the minimum entry requirements for the target vocational course

Step 2: Choose your study goal. Our admissions advisors will help you identify whether you want to complete General English as a standalone programme, as preparation for a specific vocational course, or as part of a packaged study plan that includes both English and a vocational qualification.
Step 3: Complete your placement assessment. All new General English students complete a placement assessment before starting so we can confirm the right starting level for your current English ability.
Step 4: Submit your enrolment application with all required supporting documents, including your passport or identification and, for international students, evidence of your student visa subclass 500.
Step 5: Receive your Letter of Offer and Written Agreement. For international students, this will include your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Review all documents carefully before accepting your place.
Step 6: Attend your orientation and begin your classes. You will receive your timetable, campus information, and access to all learning resources before your first day.
