Course Overview
This qualification reflects the role of building professionals who apply knowledge of structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and managing construction work in building projects including residential and commercial with the following limitations:
- Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
- Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.
Occupational titles may include:
- Builder
- General Foreperson
- Building Inspector.
The construction industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have access to a live building and construction workplace to meet the requirements detailed in the Assessment Requirements of core unit CPCCBC4008 Supervise communication and administration processes for building and construction projects.
Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Builder licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.
To complete the CPC50220 - Diploma of Building and Construction (Building),
candidates must accomplish twenty-seven (27) UNITS comprising:
- 24 core units
- 3 elective units
a maximum of one unit may be from any training package or accredited course as long as it ensures the integrity of the qualification’s Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) alignment and contributes to a valid, industry supported vocational outcome.

Target groups for the CPC50220 - Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) are international students who are:
• Seeking to pursue a career in building and construction
• Seeking to enter a new industry sector
• Seeking a pathway to higher-level qualifications.
Characteristics of the target group are as follows:
Students will be from a range of countries and may be living in Australia for the first time or may have been here in the recent or more distant past.
Many will speak English as a second language, although an entry level has been set to ensure students are able to complete course work.
Typically, persons entering this qualification will not have any work or study experience. Students are expected to typically fall into the age range of 18 – 35 as people still establishing or changing careers.
Training will be conducted face to face on a fulltime basis in a classroom and a live worksite
Classrooms for the theory component of the course will be delivered at approved CRICOS sites:

A live worksite location is used for selected units of competency. The specific location varies depending on the unit being delivered, the requirements of the unit of competency, and the relevant stage of construction.
This qualification will be delivered over 52 weeks, including 48 weeks of training and assessment spread over 4 terms of 12 weeks each and 4 weeks of holidays.
Pre-requisite:
There is no pre-requisite or entry requirement set for this qualification However, international students desiring to get admitted to Imperial Institute of Sydney need to meet the following entry requirements: Age, Education and English Language Proficiency: |
International students must:
· Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent. · Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs. · Have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following: o Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or o Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO; or o Successful completion of an English Placement Test *Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted. Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 6.0 |
Pre-training Review (PTR):
All international learners will be required to undertake pre-training review which aims to identify their training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the courses to learner, relevant experience and interview conducted by Institute’s enrolment officer using IIS pre-enrolment kit and enrolment interview. Interview also aims to identify suitability of the course, any support needs and possible RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) opportunities.
Through pre-training review learner will demonstrate that they have necessary skills to successfully complete the course.
Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Test (LLND)
Candidate undertaking this course must possess sound LLND skills.
All learners are required to undertake a language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) test (LLN and Digital robot test are used) mapped at ACSF level 3 conducted by institute.
If learners do not meet English and LLN requirements, they will be asked to take further Language, literacy and numeracy training and English Language.
Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) programs with another institute (as IIS does NOT offer ELICOS) at their own expense before they enrol into this course.
Academic Requirements:
To enter this qualification, applicants should have successfully completed year 12 or secondary studies, equivalent to Australian senior secondary school examination, in their home country.
Computer Literacy:
All learners enrolling into IIS’s courses must have basic computer literacy. They are required to demonstrate their computer literacy during pre-training review.
Those learners who do not possess basic computing skills will be referred to taking basic computer training, e.g., International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL), before enrolment. Please note that a fee is charged for ICDL (Please refer to https://icdl.org/ for more details).
Access to Materials and Equipment:
IIS will provide access to computers/laptops with access to internet during classroom hours. However, to work on assignments and tasks for self-study, all learners are expected to have access to a laptop or a computer with Windows 7 or later operating system. Students must also have an active email address and be contactable by a mobile phone or a landline and by post (which requires an active mailing address) for communications.
All learners are expected to have access to MS Office applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.
