Resources & Materials
The painting and decorating industry relies on a wide range of tools, materials, and products to achieve safe, durable, and professional finishes. As part of the CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, students are introduced to industry-standard resources and learn how to use them correctly in different work environments.
Students will work with:
- Hand and power tools, including paint brushes, rollers, spray guns, sanders, scrapers, and cutting tools
- Access equipment, such as ladders, trestles, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms, is used safely in line with WHS requirements
- Surface preparation products, including fillers, sealants, primers, undercoats, and cleaning agents
- Paints and coatings, such as acrylic paints, enamels, varnishes, stains, waterproofing membranes, and protective coatings
- Decorative materials, including textured coatings, wallpapers, feature finishes, and special-effect products
- Safety equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), respirators, gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing
Students also learn how to:
- Select the right materials for different surfaces and environments
- Store and handle paints and chemicals safely
- Reduce waste and follow environmentally sustainable work practices
- Comply with Australian standards and manufacturer instructions

- Be 18 years or over.
- Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent or a Certificate IV qualification.
- Be competent in written and spoken English with an IELTS Score of no less than 6 or equivalent language test score. Results older than two years are not acceptable.Â
- English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
- Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
- Successful completion of an English Placement Test.
Undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment relevant to your course. This is to identify whether you need additional support to complete your course successfully.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in:
- 29 units of competency:
- 26 core units
- 3 elective units.
Elective units of competency can be selected as follows:
- 3 from the listed electives
or
- 2 from the listed electives and 1 from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course, as long as it contributes to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome and supports the AQF level of this qualification.

- Painter and Decorator: Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction, as well as higher-level qualifications in building and construction.
- Completing or continuing an apprenticeship in painting and decorating
- Further study in construction-related qualifications, such as Certificate IV programs in building, construction, or supervision
- Specialised short courses in decorative finishes, heritage restoration, protective coatings, or advanced spray techniques

Assessments are designed to mirror real-world tasks and industry standards, helping students develop the skills needed for their careers. They take place in a simulated workplace environment and assess practical abilities, teamwork, and time management.
Assessment Arrangements
Assessment will occur through a variety of methods, including projects incorporating role-plays, presentations, reports, portfolios, case studies and short answer questions. Assessment conditions will ensure a simulated workplace environment.
Assessment tasks:
- Reflect real-life work tasks.
- Are required to be performed within industry standard timeframes as specified by assessors in relation to each task.
- Are assessed using assessment criteria that relate to the quality of work expected by the industry.
- Are performed to industry safety requirements as relevant.
- Utilise authentic workplace documentation.
- Require students to work with others as part of a team.
- Require students to plan and prioritise competing work tasks.
- Involve the use of standard workplace equipment such as computers and software.
- Ensure that students are required to consider workplace constraints such as time and budgets.
Assessment Materials
Assessment materials comprise:
- Student Assessment Tasks: There is one for each unit of competency that includes instructions to students about each of their assessments. It also includes an assessment plan where students can record the due dates of each task and an Assessment Task Cover Sheet that must be completed for each Assessment submission.
- Other documents specific to the workplace simulation task requirementsare also included with the assessment tasks. These include document templates and simulated workplace policies and procedures, and are described in the student and assessor instructions as relevant.
Re-assessment
Re-assessment criteria:
Each assessment task will be given an outcome of either Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (NS). Students must complete all tasks for a unit satisfactorily to achieve an overall outcome of Competent (C) for the unit. If one or more of the tasks are assessed as Not Satisfactory, they will be given an outcome for the unit of Not Yet Competent (NYC).
The student can have a total of 3 attempts to complete each task and achieve a ‘Satisfactory’ outcome (noting that the third attempt is chargeable as per the fees and refunds policy). If, after the third attempt, the student is still assessed as Not Satisfactory for a task, they will need to re-enrol in the unit.
Assessment Appeals
Students can make an appeal against any assessment decision by following the Complaints and Appeals Policy outlined in the Student Handbook.
Appeals will be dealt with following the Complaints and Appeals Procedure.
